These Are the Business World's Best CEOs

When Ford (NYSE: F  ) was beginning to have serious troubles in late 2006 -- it was bleeding money and losing market share -- the company did something about it: It hired an outsider to take over as CEO. Not only was Alan Mulally not coming from within the company to become CEO, he was in a different industry entirely: He worked in aviation for Boeing.

Some wondered if the decision was a good one at the time, but the intervening six years have made the verdict perfectly clear: He was the right man for the job.

These types of moves -- hiring an outsider -- get a lot of press. The most recent example would be Yahoo!'s decision to hire Marissa Mayer as CEO. Though she has experience working in the industry -- she was employee No. 20 at Google -- she'd never spent a day as a Yahoo! employee before taking over.

Not as common as you might think
Though these instances get lots of coverage from the financial media -- and though from time to time they are excellent moves for certain companies -- they are far less common and effective than you might think. In fact, when examining some of the best CEOs in the world, you discover that many of them took over unceremoniously after working their way up through their organizations for decades.

Top 5 Dividend Companies To Buy Right Now

At the start of 2013, Glassdoor.com -- a website that collects employee sentiment for companies across the world -- came out with a list of the top 50 CEOs for the year. Because the Fool focuses on investing in publicly traded companies, I went through and eliminated any company not traded on an American stock exchange to come up with a top 25 list just for Fool readers.

The list reveals two key distinctions. First, most CEOs have a history at their company that lasts decades and goes far beyond their tenure as chief executive. The average CEO has spent 20 years with his or her company.

Source: Company-provided biographies.

The second big takeaway is that having a top-level CEO matters. Over the past five years, the companies led by these CEOs have far outpaced the S&P 500's return. And when we look at the six CEOs included in the list that also happen to be the founders of their companies, the results are even better.

Source: YCharts.

Dig deeper yourself
Over the past two weeks, I've covered each and every one of these CEOs, from No. 25 to No. 1.

Most of the time, the kind of information you can get about a CEO and the culture he/she creates won't show up on a financial statement or press release, but it's every bit as important to the success of a company and -- in turn -- your investment.

Click on any of the links below to dive in and see who this year's top CEOs are, as selected by their employees.

CEOs 25 through 21 include two bank CEOs and a founder who has been at the helm for 42 years. CEOs 20 through 16 are almost all in the technology sector, with the exception of one whose coffee stores you're probably very familiar with. CEOs 15 through 11 include two well-known company founders. CEO No. 10 started his company in a rented apartment in San Francisco. CEO No. 9 never actually wanted to be a CEO. CEO No. 8 met his co-founder while visiting Stanford and the two agreed on nothing... at first. CEO No. 7 works from France, even though headquarters are in Ireland. CEO No. 6 used time-honored, Great Depression lessons from his relatives to keep his bank out of serious trouble. CEO No. 5 is not only a manager, but an engineer with intimate knowledge of how his company's technology works. CEO No. 4 took over a company in shambles after the dot-com bust and rebuilt it to its current greatness. CEO No. 3 benefited from some geographical luck recently, but is taking his company global now. CEOs No. 2  are the only co-CEOs on this list. CEO No. 1 is probably one of the most famous CEOs in the world, and his company was also rated as the best place to work in 2013, a pretty amazing feat!

Who will rule technology over the next decade?
It's incredible to think just how much of our digital and technological lives are almost entirely shaped and molded by just a handful of companies. We've picked out five of them that are the leaders, and it just so happens that four of them are run by CEOs on this list.

$270M chocolate plant proves USA's sweet tooth

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Americans aren't losing their taste for chocolate. Need proof? Look to Kansas, where candy giant Mars is operating its first new plant in 35 years to churn out millions of sweets every day.

Company officials had a grand opening Thursday for the sprawling, $270 million chocolate plant — which they say exists mostly to meet U.S. demand for its M&M's and Snickers-brand candy.

The plant, built south of Topeka, will be able to produce 14 million bite-sized Snickers each day, as well as 39 million M&M's, enough to fill 1.5 million fun-sized packs. The company expects the plant to be filling orders for another 50 years.

With the scent of chocolate in the air, dozens of workers in white uniforms and hairnets cheered as Gov. Sam Brownback helped turn a lever that brought the machines to life and signaled the official start of production.

Top Blue Chip Stocks To Buy Right Now

"Somebody doesn't put this kind of money in, without having a long-term strategy," Brownback said after the ceremony. "They see a long-term, solid play."

It's a sweet deal for state and local officials, too. The 500,000-square-foot facility is bringing about 200 jobs to the Topeka area, and the company plans to open a store downtown for several weeks.

Local officials, who joined the company at the grand opening, also are earning the right to brag that Topeka's workforce, central location and accessible site enabled the region to win the plant over several dozen other communities.

Matt Hudak, who follows the U.S. market for "impulse" foods as an analyst for market researcher Euromonitor International, said candy makers can expect to see annual growth in chocolate sales stay above 3%, making chocolate "a continual bright spot." He also said Mars has been good at introducing new products, such as pretzel M&Ms and bite-sized Snickers to keep consumers interested.

Even ! in uncertain economic times, he said, chocolate remains an "affordable luxury."

"There is little reason to suggest that, all of a sudden in the U.S., people will start to dislike chocolate," he said.

The new chocolate factory is a sign that Mars officials are well aware of the trend and are bullish about future sales. Mars Chocolate North America President Debra Sandler said nine other plants are operating at full capacity, and Mars Board Chairwoman Victoria Mars said the new plant will allow the company to end "bottlenecks" in getting its products to market. The new plant will operate 24 hours a day for five days a week.

"I don't want to say to my customers that I can't fulfill their orders," Sandler said during the ceremony "Topeka will allow me the freedom to build the business in the U.S."

The company's New Jersey-based chocolate unit, Mars Chocolate, has 16,000 employees in 21 countries. It produces 29 brands that include M&Ms and Snickers, which it says are billion-dollar brands, but also Milky Way, Twix and 3 Musketeers.

The family-owned Mars also has its Wrigley division, which produces gum, hard candies and chewy candies. It also has non-candy food products, produces pet foods and runs pet hospitals.

Before the Kansas facility was built, the company's last new plant in North America was in Cleveland, Tenn.

BlackBerry Goes Green Thanks To Smaller Than Anticipated Loss

Not long ago BlackBerry was all but left for dead. Shares shed 36.5% in value last year with many believing the best the former smartphone king could hope for was to be sold for parts. The company's financial situation still isn't pretty, but shares are up more than 18% so far in 2014. And the stock's post-earnings pop Friday shows new hope among investors.

For the fourth quarter, BlackBerry reported $976 million in revenue, down 64% from the same period during the prior year. Services made up 56% of the phone maker's sales, 37% came from hardware and 7% came from software. The company reported a $423 million net loss, or an 80 cent loss per share.

Despite the steep loss, shares popped at one point more than 4% to $9.43 in pre-market trading thanks to a lighter than anticipated non-GAAP loss per share. Wall Street analysts were expecting a non-GAAP loss of 55 cents per share, but excluding several one time charges the company reported just an 8 cent non-GAAP loss.

"I am very pleased with our progress and execution in fiscal Q4 against the strategy we laid out three months ago. We have significantly streamlined operations, allowing us to reach our expense reduction target one quarter ahead of schedule," said CEO John Chen in a statement. "BlackBerry is on sounder financial footing today with a path to returning to growth and profitability."

For the full fiscal 2014 year, BlackBerry reported $6.8 billion in revenue, down from $11.1 billion in the year prior. On a GAAP basis the company had a $5.9 billion net loss, or $11.18 per share.

Looking ahead the company simply noted that it "anticipates maintaining its strong cash position and continuing to look for opportunities to streamline operations. The Company is targeting break even cash flow results by the end of fiscal 2015." In the fourth quarter BlackBerry used $553 million in cash flow for operations, and $243 million investing activities. As of March 1, 2014 the company has $1.6 billion in cash and cash equivalents.

Nissan, BMW, and Tesla Can't All Be Wrong; Green Automotive is Right on Track (NSANY, GACR, BMW, TSLA)

While Green Automotive Co. (OTCMKTS:GACR) is certainly no Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (OTCMKTS:NSANY) or Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (FRA:BMW) (better known as BMW)  in terms of size or notoriety, the two larger car companies certainly seem to be validating the work that GACR is doing. Both Nissan and BMW are betting big on electric vehicles, partly because they want to, and partly because they have to. Either way, Green Automotive is just as capable of tapping into this EV megatrend as its bigger and more established brothers are.

For those not familiar, Green Automotive is a young and highly diversified electric vehicle player. It's got a dealership network (for several manufacturers) in the U.K. through its Goin'  Green arm, an electric vehicle maintenance and repair division vie its Liberty subsidiary, and its Newport Coachworks brand makes electric shuttle buses from the ground up. They're a big hit too, as noted in this morning's press release. And more recently, through its purchase of Blackhawk - the supplier of fiberglass body parts for its Newport Coachworks division - it now controls its supply chain for that fastest-growing and arguably most important division. It's conceivable that Blackhwawk could fabricate fiberglass body parts for any kind of vehicle that Green Automotive Co. could aim to build, which leaves one to ponder what would happen if GACR decided to go toe-to-toe with an electric car maker like Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA), or perhaps become the Tesla of Europe, where TSLA isn't well established... where the EV market is still up for grabs.

Just for the record though, Green Automotive isn't going to just have to worry about Tesla in the foreseeable future. The aforementioned Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and Nissan Motor Co. are both planning on wading at least waist deep into the electric vehicle market, and soon.

Earlier this month, Nissan reported they expect to sell 1.5 million electric vehicles by 2020, mostly by tapping into emerging markets. It's a big number, but not unattainable. The company has sold 100,000 units of its Leaf electric vehicle (would the plural be Leaves?) since its somewhat limited launch in 2010.

Meanwhile, Bayerische Motoren Werke, or BMW, reported earlier this month that it believes it can sell 100,000 electric vehicles in Europe alone, by 2020. Given that its electric i3 was sold out pretty quickly after debuting in Europe late last year, it's not a tough goal to believe.

More important to Green Automotive Co. and GACR shareholders, the fact that Nissan and BMW are upping the ante on EVs bodes well for smaller newcomers. How so? If the bigger players are willing to stick their neck out on a still-unproven idea, then they're confident that electric vehicles are the future (and companies like Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and Nissan Motor don't make bets based purely on hope - their planners and strategists have thought things through before any money was committed). That rising tide is apt to lift all boats of all sizes, including a small player like Green Automotive. Indeed, a small, nimble company like Green Automotive may actually outmaneuver its bigger peers as the EV industry fully matures.

Bottom line? While Green Automotive Co. may still be the kid brother of the EV industry, it's growing up fast, and there's going to be plenty of opportunity for all of these companies to thrive over the next ten years as new mileage and emission mandates become reality. Those mandates, like the United States' requirement that combustion vehicles be capable of getting 55 miles per gallon by 2025, are going to be tough for traditional carmakers to make. Indeed, those cars may be prohibitively expensive, if they're available at all. Electric cars may well become the norm, not just here in the United States, but as similar laws are implemented globally over the next decade or so.  That puts GACR in the catbird's seat, as it's best-equipped to make (and service) all electric cars and buses that will meet the new mandates.

How to Benefit From MLP’s Complex Tax Rules

Master limited partnerships are attractive total-return vehicles for investors, but their tax treatment can be intimidating.

ThinkAdvisor spoke with Abby Woodham, a fund analyst with Morningstar’s Passive Fund Research group in Chicago, about what issues investors should keep in mind when mulling MLP purchases and sales.

Can you briefly summarize the rather complex issue of MLP taxation?

Individual MLPs, which are partnerships and are not seen as separate from their owners, pass their tax liability onto unitholders, so you—the investor—would owe taxes on your portion of an MLP’s taxable income, which is stated on a K-1 tax form.

If your MLP investment generates high enough income in a state other than your own, you could have to file a tax return in that state. Luckily, some states (Texas, for instance) do not levy a state income tax.

This can be a bit of a pain for some people.

Can you explain what makes MLP taxation complicated?

The distributions you receive are treated as return of capital, and reduce your cost basis. You only pay tax on these distributions when you sell your MLPs units. This is effectively tax-differed distribution. Plus, you only pay taxes on the taxable part of a distribution, which often can be zero.

MLPs can use depreciation to reduce their reported net income lower than the level of cash they are distributing to unitholders.

If, for example, you had $100 of shares and sold them for $105 at the end of the year. The MLP paid you a $5 distribution, but only $1 is taxable income because of depreciation. The remaining $4 is treated as return of capital. You are not liable for a tax on it today, but it gets deducted from your cost basis. So, you owe taxes on the $1 at your ordinary income rate.

If you hold the MLPs, you would just pay your ordinary income tax rate on the $1 and wait to pay any tax on the $4. When you finally sell your shares, you pay your ordinary income rate on the $4 because it’s recapture of past depreciation deductions. You get the benefit of tax deferment. As the years go on, it can be attractive.

Best Safest Stocks To Own For 2014

On the flipside, if you own an MLP for just a year, you’re paying the ordinary rate on your distributions. That’s less attractive that the rate you’d pay on qualified dividend income from stocks.

The longer you own an MLP, the more tax deferment becomes an attractive proposition.

How else can investors hold MLPs?

Exchange-traded notes’ taxation is fairly straightforward. The ETN does not hold any securities, but pays out the return of the index less fees, so you get a distribution as if you owned the securities. Again, there is no MLP ownership, so the distribution is taxed at the ordinary income rate. If you sell the ETN shares, you’ll pay capital gains tax on any price appreciation.

It’s straightforward, but there is no tax deferred distribution. For those looking for this deferment, ETNs may not be best.

ETFs are more complicated, since ETFs hold the securities in an index. They have actual MLP ownership, and most have to be structured as C corporations—like the Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP).

The “bummer” part is that the ETF must accrue for the future tax liability of unrealized gains in its portfolio. That amount is deducted from the fund’s NAV daily.

This means a typical investor has to give up 37-38% of total return to the accrued deferred corporate income tax liability. Investors receive a 1099, not a K-1. The fund company handles the K-1s.

As of late January, AMLP was up 11% vs. the 18% for the index. The gap reflects the corporate tax liability, which is a function of its structure. That’s a big bite out of your performance, especially when MLPs are going great.

There’s a new second-generation of MLP ETFs, which are made of MLPs (25%) and MLP affiliates and related utilities (75%). This concept is interesting but young, so it’s hard to say much about its tax implications yet.

What’s the best way to compare these investments?

Owning MLPs can be a bit of a nightmare, since there is no perfect way to own them, but investors do have a few options--ETNs, ETF, closed-end funds and straight-up ownership of individual MLPs.

The general rule is that if you are interested in total returns but don’t need the tax deferral on distributions, look at ETNs. If you’re only interested in income and not price returns, then it might be worth looking at ETFs for their tax treatment of distributions. If you only own a handful of individual MLPs, it’s easier to file a K-1 than in the past. For example, you can report the K-1 information using TurboTax.

Also, you could own five or 10 MLPs like an index does, if you’re not bothered by the K-1.

It all depends on the individual investor.

Top Computer Hardware Companies To Buy Right Now

Purchasing a prospect list or subscribing to some lead generation service is one of the more mundane activities of financial advisors seeking to build their business.

But that unremarkable activity flies in the face of a powerful emerging new trend across the economy — the rise of “big data” — whose very essence is analyzing and understanding the data assets you already own.

That is one of the findings of a new study of big data based specifically on financial professionals. The global survey, conducted jointly by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA),  might have been inspired by the needs of the accounting profession, but its lessons should apply equally to other financial professionals.

Respondents included more than 2000 CFOs and other finance professionals from more than 80 countries, and the feedback included interviews with senior executives.

One such interview was with Matthew Keylock, a top executive with dunnhumby, a data analytics company that helps companies better understand their customers.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

So far the brewing recovery effort from IceWEB, Inc. (OTCBB:IWEB) has remained off most traders' radars. That may be about to change, however. That's why you may want to go ahead and take a speculative plunge on IWEB now, on faith that the clues we're seeing now will indeed end up as they're suggesting.

What the Catch with Dephasium Corp? According to various disclosures, transactions of $2k, $2.5k, $3k, $4k, $7.5k, $12.5k and $15k have or will occur to mention Dephasium Corp in various investment newsletters. Dephasium Corp has been getting plenty of off and on attention for a couple of months now, but what been pretty strange is the company issuing a press release to announce that an unidentified third party, without the DPHS approval, has listed its shares on the Boerse Berlin Stock Exchange. The press release warned that this could be the first salvo in a ignificant naked shorting attack directed at the Companygiven that the Berlin exchange is one of few stock exchanges in the world that allows listing and trading of a company's stock without the consent or authorization of the company being listed in order to facilitate short-selling. A quick look at Dephasium Corp financials reveals no revenues; net losses of $10k (most recent reported quarter), $17k and $11k plus net income of $388k; and $51k to cover $9k in current liabilities at the end of March. In other words, Dephasium Corp isn making money but someone else is trying to make some from it.

Small cap IceWEB is a provider of Unified Data Storage appliances for cloud and virtual environments, as well as the highly secure, scalable IceBOXTM BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Private Digital Cloud Solution. x86: With regards to the specific x86 server business, it seems that IBM is considering the possibility of fully divesting it. According to Morgan Stanley, the server business generated about $4.9 billion of the company's $15.4 billion in server sales last year. This enormous volume is due to the fact that IBM may be producing the overall market's highest volumes, at the lowest profit level; which suggests this segment is doomed. Finally, IBM has a history of aggressive shifts to areas with better growth prospects and margins. For example, the company agreed to sell off the PC business to Lenovo (LNVGF.PK) at a moment where the PC still seemed attractive.

Market Wrap-up for Mar. 24 – Why We’re Bullish on Telecom Giants (T, VZ)

Over the past couple of years, telecom giants like AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) have been largely left out of the wider market’s massive bull run. Here’s four reasons why we believe these stocks are now poised to outperform over the next several years.

1. Yield Matters

Pop quiz: name the top two highest-yielding stocks in the Dow 30. If you said AT&T (5.4% yield) and Verizon (4.5%), you’re a winner.

Now for a much tougher question: name the third highest-yielding Dow 30 stock. No, not General Electric (GE), although GE’s 3.47% yield is close. Believe it or not, tech giant Intel (INTC) is the third highest-yielding Dow component, at 3.58% – almost a full percentage point behind Verizon, and nearly two percentage points below AT&T.

The combination of near record-low interest rates and a lack of true high-yield blue chip names means T and VZ should be a part of any long-term portfolio right now.

2. The Only Bargains Left?

The average P/E (price-to-earnings) ratio for the S&P 500 is around 20, which is pretty high, considering the historical average is around 15. AT&T’s fiscal 2015 P/E? 12.5. Verizon’s? 12. Below average valuations and well above average yields? Sign me up.

With reasonably-priced stocks hard to come by these days, investors should be flocking to these two telecom giants. And when the markets do finally post some long overdue pullbacks, T and VZ will look even better, since investors tend to target safe-haven plays during times of uncertainty.

3. A Wireless, Connected Future

Unlike major tobacco names, which offer similar yields to T and VZ, the telecom industry as a whole still has plenty of growth ahead of it. Any tech expert worth his or her salt will tell you that the days of physically wired infrastructure build-outs are almost over – the future is in wireless, and AT&T and Verizon are at the forefront of it.

What’s more, the proliferation of streaming online media (Netflix et al) means consumers will be even more dependent on Internet Service Providers (ISPs) than ever before. Sure, cable revenue has probably already topped, but the need for fast, reliable Internet access continues to grow in spades – especially in the mobile arena, which T and VZ have a firm control over.

4. A Renewed, Legal Monopoly

Back in 1982, a trust-busting Department of Justice forced AT&T to split up the Bell System into seven regional entities called Baby Bells. Guess what’s happened since then? AT&T and Bell Atlantic (later known as Verizon) eventually just re-acquired nearly all the Baby Bells. When traditional landline phone service became passe, and wireless took over, AT&T and Verizon again asserted their dominance, making key acquisitions and becoming the dominant major carriers in the U.S., controlling nearly two-thirds of the market (if regulators hadn’t blocked T’s recent takeover bid for T-Mobile, that total would be even higher).

Disrupting AT&T and Verizon’s hold on the telecom sector is a very tall order, and quite frankly isn’t even a concern for the foreseeable future.

After Market: Stocks Finish Wild Week with a Whimper

Stocks bounced in and out of the plus column before picking a direction on Friday. Unfortunately, the path chosen was down again, though not far. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) extended its losing streak to five days, dropping another 43 points. The Standard & Poor's 500 (^GSPC) fell 5 and the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) lost 15 points. In all, each of the major averages lost in the neighborhood of a quarter of a percent Friday, and all lost ground for the week. Meanwhile, another once-popular teen retailer took a tumble. Shares of Aeropostale (ARO) tumbled 20 percent after the retailer posted a wider than expected quarterly loss. The stock is now down 60 percent over the past year. But investors were buying some other retailers. Zumiez (ZUMZ), also geared toward teens, rose 2½ percent despite forecasting a loss in the current quarter. A couple of chains geared toward women did well. Ulta Salon (ULTA) gained nearly 6½ percent as earnings topped expectations. Ann (ANN), best known for its Ann Taylor stores, rose 7½ percent. And Coach (COH) gained 2 percent. Other gainers today: Green Mountain (GMCR), maker of Keurig, was up 7 percent, after expanding its deal with Starbucks. Liberty Media (LSTZA) ended its deal to buy those shares of Sirius XM (SIRI) it doesn't already own. Both stocks gained on the news; Liberty up 7 percent, Sirius up 2 percent. And Castlight Health (CSLT) soared nearly 150 percent above its $16 a share IPO price. The company, which helps workers choose healthcare benefits, stands to gain from Obamacare. On the downside: Tesla (TSLA) lost another 3 percent on reports that New York could become the fifth state to block the company from selling direct to consumers. Still, Tesla has a pretty good track record. It's stock has soared more than 500 percent over the past year. Biotechs continued to lose ground. Celgene (CELG) fell 4 percent on a double dose of bad news. British regulators reportedly plan to reject the company's application to market a cancer treatment there. And a U.S. judge will hear a challenge to the company's patent on that same drug. What to Watch Monday: The Federal Reserve Bank of New York releases its survey of manufacturing conditions within New York state at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time. The Treasury Department releases foreign holdings of U.S. debt for January at 9 a.m. The Federal Reserve reports industrial production for January at 9:15 a.m. The National Association of Home Builders releases March housing-market data at 10 a.m. .

2013 has been a stellar year for asset manager WisdomTree Investments (WETF); shares have nearly doubled since the calendar flipped over to January. That's not a huge surprise considering the fact that investment firms are effectively leveraged plays on this equity rally. But now, the technical setup forming in shares of WisdomTree points to even higher ground for the rest of the year.

Right now, WETF is forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $14 and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as WETF bounces in between those two technical levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $14 level. When that happens, investors have a buy signal.

WisdomTree isn't exactly cheap right now. From a fundamental standpoint, this stock looks downright pricey -- but that has little to do with shares' price action right now. Until the technicals change, the high probability returns remain on the long-side of WETF.

Going through his papers, he found a list of stocks that UBS said to buy if Obama won the election in 2012, including the likes of United Rentals (URI) , First Solar (FSLR), Alliant Techsystems (ATK), Alkermes (ALKS) and Mohawk Industries (MHK). And wouldn’t you know it, those stocks have gained 58% this year, compared to the S&P 500′s 27% gain. And just in case you’re wondering, those stocks have also trumped UBS’s Romney basket, which has gained 33%.

Best Transportation Companies To Watch For 2014

On Jul 5, we maintained our Neutral recommendation on United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS). The company improved business-to-customer (B2C) services, rate hikes, planned investment program and profitable alliances bear evidence to its strength. However, several headwinds could impede its operating results going forward. This transportation and logistics service provider holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Why Maintained?

We believe that United Parcel stands tall with a focused approach towards expansion, various strategic measures, collaborations with other leading firms, a well-defined business model and constant technology upgrades. The company policy of increasing freight and general rates on a regular basis remains a key driver for yield expansion in the current market scenario.

United Parcel is targeting to tap the growing opportunities in the health care business sector. With distribution units dedicated to health care in the key markets of North and South America, the company now plans to open health care distribution facilities in the emerging markets of China, India and Japan. To fortify its presence in Europe, United Parcel is set to acquire Hungary-based pharmaceutical logistics company CEMELOG Zrt.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Rapier]

But it is important to note that ETE also has interests in Sunoco Logistics Partners (NYSE: SXL) and Regency Energy Partners (NYSE: RGP).

Finally, consider NuStar Energy (NYSE: NS) and its general partner NuStar GP Holdings (NYSE: NSH). Like ETE, NSH went public in 2006 and has also significantly outperformed its limited partner since:

The vast majority of partnerships don’t have a publicly-traded GP. But in each of these three cases in which the GP is publicly traded, the GP tends to outperform the LP units on long-term gains, an advantage somewhat offset by the typically higher LP yield.

Best Transportation Companies To Watch For 2014: Kinder Morgan Management LLC (KMR)

Kinder Morgan Management, LLC is a limited partner in Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P (KMP), and manages and controls its business and affairs pursuant to a delegation of control agreement. Kinder Morgan G.P., Inc., of which Kinder Morgan, Inc. indirectly owns all of the outstanding common equity, is the general partner of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. (KMP). Kinder Morgan G.P., Inc., pursuant to a delegation of control agreement among the Company, Kinder Morgan G.P., Inc. and KMP, has delegated to the Company, to the fullest extent permitted under Delaware law and KMP limited partnership agreement, all of its rights and powers to manage and control the business and affairs of KMP, subject to the general partner right to approve specified actions.

Almost all of Kinder Morgan assets are owned by KMP, KMP operates in five business segments : Natural Gas Pipelines, Products Pipelines, CO2, Terminals and Kinder Morgan Canada.

Kinder Morgan is a transporter and marketer of carbon dioxide in North America. It delivers approximately 1.3 billion cubic feet per day of CO2 through about 1,300 miles of pipelines. It is an oil producer in Texas, producing over 55,000 barrels of oil per day at the SACROC Unit and the Yates Field in the Permian Basin. In addition to CO2 pipelines and oil producing fields, this business segment owns interests in and operates CO2 source fields, natural gas and gasoline processing plants, and a crude oil pipeline. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

And finally, there are the Kinder Morgan triplets, Kinder Morgan, Inc. (KMI) and Kinder Morgan Management (KMR) and Kinder Morgan Partners (KMP), which fell 6%, 4.7% and 3%, respectively today. The reason for the drop: a press release from Hedgeye Risk Management, which called Kinder Morgan “a house of cards,” and said to expect a report on Sept. 10, explaining why. Deutsche Bank came out with its own note today defending Kinder Morgan, but the damage was done. Considering that Hedgeye’s Kevin Kaiser (and our own Andrew Bary) got Linn Energy (LINE) right, you can see why.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Aimee Duffy]

The role of the barge can't be underestimated. Barge receipts increased more than two percentage points year over year, and this is a great place for investors to look for opportunity. Companies with maritime resources benefit from this trend, as well as growth in exports. Three such companies that are worth a look are:

Kirby Corporation (NYSE: KEX  ) , which operates 30% of the coastal tank barges in the U.S. Oiltanking Partners (NYSE: OILT  ) , which has storage capacity of 12.1 million barrels and six deepwater docks on the Houston Ship Channel Martin Midstream Partners (NASDAQ: MMLP  ) , which operates a large fleet of inland barges and controls 31 marine terminals

These companies won't be the only winners, but they are a good place to start your research.

Moreover, coal hasn't been a complete bust for CSX. Both CSX and peer Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC  ) have exposure to the coal-rich Appalachian region, and they've found emerging markets like China and India are still willing to ship coal halfway around the world as a cheaper alternative to limited supplies of oil and natural gas. Even domestically, extremely low natural-gas prices have been the primary driver of the move away from coal, and as gas prices return to more typical levels, the relative costs of dealing with side effects of coal use like pollution will encourage greater coal consumption.

More than 20% of total rail carloads stem from the coal industry. Because of this reliance on coal shipments, CSX (NYSE: CSX  ) and Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC  ) each saw revenues from coal shipments drop by double digits in the first quarter of 2013 versus the same quarter last year. This also can't be great news for Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A  ) , as it owns BNSF railroads, which holds a 33% market share in coal shipments by rail, according to 2012 data.
