Small cap cardiac monitoring stock BioTelemetry Inc (NASDAQ: BEAT) has more than tripled in value since the start of the yearfar outperforming large cap cardiac peers like Medtronic, Inc (NYSE: MDT) and St. Jude Medical, Inc (NYSE: STJ). We have also had BioTelemetry in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio since June 12 and even we have not been late to the party as we are sitting on a 96.67% gain since then. But will the beat go on for investors and what about the performance of large caps Medtronic and St. Jude Medical?

Formerly known as CardioNet, small capheart monitoring stockBioTelemetry Inc (NASDAQ: BEAT) has been a big winner has racked up a 247.7% return since the start of the year. And while we were sort oflate to the party when we added it to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO)back in June, we still have a respectable 59.38% return in the stocks. But is there reason to believe the beat will go on for investors, even those still not yet in on the returns?

AP/Jae C. Hong Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From a book lover's tablet continuing to fade in the marketplace to a strong year for satellite radio, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst in the business world. Nook -- Loser Barnes & Noble (BKS) has seen the popularity of its Nook line of e-readers and tablets fade in recent quarters, but things have never slipped so sharply as they did during the holiday season. The bookseller is reporting a 60.5 percent plunge in Nook sales for the nine weeks ending Dec. 28. In short, there weren't a lot of Nooks in Santa's sleigh this year. The news is grim on the hardware end with devices and accessories off a steep 66.7 percent, but even digital sales fell a disappointing 27.3 percent. The Nook was supposed to be Barnes & Noble's catalyst for growth in a future in which consumers have tired of hardcovers and paperbacks. But now it's making up just 11 percent of the superstore chain's sales -- and falling fast. Something tells me there won't be a storybook ending for the Nook. Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) -- Winner Sirius XM Radio began the week moving higher after receiving an offer over the weekend to be acquired by majority investor Liberty Media (LMCA). It wasn't much of a premium, but that's what can happen when a company owns more than 51 percent of another. Then the satellite radio provider announced that it closed out 2013 with a better than expected 25.56 million subscribers. Sirius XM's previous outlook was to close out the year with 1.6 million net additions. It wound up adding 1.66 million net subscribers in 2013. Michael Bay -- Loser There are many opinions out there on the winners and losers during this week's CES expo as consumer tech companies introduce their latest gadgetry, but it's hard to beat Samsung's presentation where Hollywood director Michael Bay abandoned the stage when the teleprompter stopped working. Perpetually struggling department store J.C. Penney Co. (JCP) said it expects a sales boost this holiday season as it returns to a promotional strategy. But for the most part, retailers including Dollar Tree Inc. (DLTR) , GameStop Corp. (GME) and Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF) gave dour outlooks in their earnings reports.
- [By Sean Williams]
Struggling department store J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP ) garnered the second spot, tacking on 4.5%, after hitting a new 52-week low earlier in the trading day. The catalyst appears to be an announcement that Penney's will be partnering with seven jewelry designers who are usually reserved for higher-end jewelry and department stores, including Kara Ross and Kenneth J. Lane. The company plans to focus on these brand-name jewelry designers, who will create a line of lower-price-point jewelry for its customer base, in the hope of providing the differentiation from other retailers that it's so sorely missing. I'd call this another good initiative on paper, but color me skeptical, as always.

As a result, the big threat that Jabil constantly faces is the potential loss of its customers. Rival Flextronics (NASDAQ: FLEX ) suffered a huge hit last summer when major customer BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY ) chose to stop using the company to help it make its namesake smartphones, citing cost-cutting efforts in its decision to make changes to its supply chain arrangements. Flextronics has seen substantial revenue declines as a result, even despite BlackBerry's relative weakness in the smartphone space in recent years. More importantly, the move came at the worst possible time, as BlackBerry has subsequently revived in the face of its latest product launch. Jabil counts BlackBerry as a customer as well, so it should be interesting to see how that relationship has developed in the wake of the Z10 and Q10 smartphone releases.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Markman Advisors]
Public companies leveraging their patent portfolios, (aka "patent plays"), are getting the market's attention. Companies such as Vringo (VRNG), ParkerVision (PRKR), MGT Capital (MGT), Worlds Inc. (WDDD.OB) and others have presented trading opportunities due to their volatility while retaining the chance for a big payoff to those investors who stay the course. Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).
