Top Integrated Utility Companies For 2014

"The secret of financially happy living is to plan for all the known events in life and to make provisions for all the unknown events in life," he explained.

Below is the edited ript of his interview on CNBC-TV18

Q: Warren Buffett has used the power of compounding to a dramatic effect in getting value for his investments to grow at spectacular rates now that is legend for the stock market. Yet, for a large majority of investors this benefit of compounding is not something they have taken advantage off can you give us the argument of compounding to convince our viewers?

A: The retail investors have still not understood the power and the benefits of compounding. From a financial planning perspective, we all have goals in life. Some of us have defined them and some have not defined them. The secret of financially happy living is to plan for all the known events in life and to make provisions for all the unknown events in life.

One of the known events which every individual is going to require to take care of is, retirement. Whether one is salaried, a business person or a profession, it could be any of the occupation; retirement is something that somebody needs to plan for. This is a planned event in life. Planning for it would essentially mean that one needs to start thinking about doing something for it and actually do something for it much in advance.

Advisors' Opinion:

Obviously, the big news for Smithfield during the quarter came from Shuanghui International's offer to buy out the company for $34 per share. The $4.7 billion offer has raised some nationalistic concerns, as the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. will have to approve the merger, but Smithfield CEO Larry Pope said last month when the deal was announced that it believes the deal won't have an effect on the company's operations. In fact, the combination of China's largest meat processor and the world's biggest pork producer could produce a formidable opponent to industry rivals. In particular, Chinese pork producer Zhongpin (NASDAQ: HOGS  ) will inevitably find itself under pressure if the deal goes through, as Shuanghui puts itself in a stronger competitive position in the industry.

Belden Inc. (NYSE: BDC) will replace Fidelity National Inc. (NYSE: FNF) in the S&P MidCap 400 June 30, when Synergy Resources (AMEX: SYRG) will replace Belden in the S&P SmallCap 600. Fidelity is reclassifying its shares into two tracking stocks which are ineligible for S&P indexes.

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm's management: the return on equity. The ratio has decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. Currently, a ROE of 45.9% is higher than all the 1,805 companies in the Diversified Industrials industry. Competitors such General Cable Corp. (BGC) has a very low ROE of 0.3% which is clearly not attractive. An alternative could be Belden Inc (BDC) with ! a positiv! e ROE of 24%.

Hot Gold Stocks To Watch For 2015: Goldcorp Incorporated(GG)

Goldcorp Inc. engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and operation of precious metal properties in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. It produces and sells gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. The company was founded in 1954 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Lee Jackson]

Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: ABX), Goldcorp Inc. (NYSE: GG), Kinross Gold Corp. (NYSE: KGC) and Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) are all sold short in the account, in equal lots of 25% each. This provides the investor with the basket of stocks that make up the other part of the trade.

  • [By Jim Powell]

Goldcorp (GG) is a gold mining pure-play that is well-suited for somewhat more aggressive investors who want a tighter focus than GDX offers. The company is the second largest producer after Barrick Gold (ABX) and is considered by many analysts to be the best in its industry.

  • [By Doug Ehrman]

Due to gold's recent plunge marking its largest percentage drop since 1980, the explosive volume in the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) , and many swirling global macroeconomic factors, the precious yellow metal has spooked investors. The decline has not been limited to the commodity, as miners like Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) , Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) , and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM  ) are experiencing precipitous declines as well. Adding to the concern is the fact that investors have been unable to pinpoint the precise cause of the collapse.

In the following video below, Fool.com contributor Doug Ehrman discusses the impact that expansionary monetary policy has had on miners such as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) and Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) , and he looks at what the end of this era could mean for those companies.

Best Electric Utility Stocks To Invest In 2014

A troubling sign has emerged among some of the biggest names in technology as a result of their most recent earnings announcements. Aggregate demand in the form of meaningful revenue growth appears to have vanished. Unfortunately, there's only so far you can cut expenses to drive new levels of profitability before investors start to recognize there's a potentially serious problem.

Anemia on the rise
Although IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) managed to satisfy investors by upping its full-year earnings guidance, Big Blue reported a year-over-year revenue decline of 3.3% to $24.9 billion, which translated to a net income decline of 16.9% in the second quarter. After adjusting for currency fluctuations, IBM's revenue would have only declined by 1%. As far as earnings guidance is concerned, the company raised its full-year outlook by $0.20 a share to $16.90, above the analyst consensus of $16.64 a share. According IBM CFO Mark Loughridge, the guidance bump can be attributed to a combination of cost-cutting, "solid" growth prospects, and potential tax settlements. To me, the boost is likely driven more on efficient maneuvering than it is on driving aggregate top-line revenue growth.

It's a great idea to get children interested in investing early, and buying some stocks for them is a great way to accomplish that. I'd recommend using a very long-term buy-and-hold strategy focused on high-quality, sustainable businesses. I'd forgo dividends and focus on long-term appreciation (just my personal opinion). Stocks that I'd recommend for this strategy include Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) , Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B  ) , CarMax (NYSE: KMX  ) , and Markel (NYSE: MKL  ) . All are great companies that I'd be happy to hold for a decade.

What Were The Key Highlights Of Twitter’s Third Quarter?

The social media player playing a catch-up game with its rivals, Twitter (TWTR), posted the third quarter results on October 27 meeting analyst expectations and reporting decent top and bottom-line figures. However, investors were not very happy with the results as the management have taken a cautious stand with respect to the fourth quarter guidance. Let's quickly peek into the quarter highlights and assess the performance of Twitter.

The quarter numbers

Revenue for the quarter came in at $361 million, beating analysts' estimates of $351 million. This was a whopping increase of 114% from last year's similar quarter when it had reported $169 million. Monthly active users (MAUs) growth was the key to the company's third quarter revenue improvement as Twitter added 16 million MAUs during the quarter.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2015

Third quarter loss narrowed to $175.5 million, or $0.29 per share, from a loss of $64.6 million, or $0.48 a share, a year back. On an adjusted basis, Twitter posted a profit of a penny a share meeting Wall Street expectations.

The key drivers

CEO Dick Costolo stated during the earnings call, "We had another very strong financial quarter. I'm confident in our ability to build the largest daily audience in the world, over time, by strengthening the core, reducing barriers to consumption and building new apps and services."

As average mobile monthly active users represented about 80% of the total MAUs in the third quarter, and timeline views reached 181 billion in the quarter exhibiting an increase of 14% year-over-year revenue showed a prominent uptick in the quarter. As Twitter's total ad revenue is generated currently majorly through mobile ads, up 70% from a year ago, it's a recommendable achievement in the social media market which is ruled by intense competition.

During the quarter, Twitter continued with its expansion plans of Twitter Ads in additional 12 markets in Central, Continental and Eastern Europe. Twitter also expanded its customer base in 12 new countries – this has obviously helped in building the global monthly active user base for the company.

Twitter has launched a slew of new and improved products in the recent months, including in-app promotions and video ads. These developments are intended to help the company win a piece of the burgeoning social advertising market which is currently dominated by Facebook (FB).

Twitter's CEO said, "Across the landscape of $1 billion digital advertising businesses, we are the fastest growing business within that landscape… we love the engagement rates we're getting with our ads."

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- A handful of the world's biggest oil companies plotted with Morgan Stanley (MS) and energy traders to manipulate Brent crude spot prices for more than a decade, four veteran traders allege in a class-action suit filed in a federal court last month, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. The lawsuit alleges that oil companies, including BP PLC (UK:BP) (BP) , Statoil ASA (NO:STL) (STO) and Royal Dutch Shell (UK:RDSA) (UK:RDSB) (RDS.A) conspired with Morgan Stanley and energy traders including Vitol Group, Trafigura Beheer BV and Phibro Trading LLC to artificially drive up or down the Dated Brent spot price by submitting false information to Platts, an energy news and price publisher, the report said. Phibro told Bloomberg that it hadn't been served in the lawsuit and said the claims were without merit. Bloomberg said that representatives of Shell, Vitol, Trafigura, Morgan Stanley and BP declined to comment on the suit.

But BP wasn done yet. The second major deal for BP was a huge $45 billion project with partners such as Norway Statoil (STO) and France’s Total (TOT). This project will tap the plethora of natural gas trapped under Azerbaijan massive Shah Deniz field, then pipe that bounty all the way into Italy and Europe. Bringing gas from Azerbaijan to Europe is being seen a strategic move that will lessen the reliance on Russian exports and Gazprom (OGZPY) current monopoly.

Top 5 Quality Companies To Buy For 2014

"We remain optimistic as the demand for high-quality steel products has not abated." So said Steel Dynamics' (NASDAQ: STLD  ) CEO Mark Millett in making yesterday's earnings announcement. But the facts beg to differ.

The $1.8 billion in sales that Steel Dynamics recorded in fiscal Q2 2013 were down about 5% from last year's Q2 sales of $1.9 billion. And with the average selling price for the company's steel dropping more than 8% per ton in comparison to last year's Q2, to $781, this hurt profits even worse. For comparison, rival mini-mill operator Nucor (NYSE: NUE  ) reportedthis morning that its average selling prices for steel were only down 7%. With prices and sales both down on a diluted earnings-per-share basis, Steel Dynamics reported $0.13 profit -- down 38% from last year.

So what's going on with Steel Dynamics? Basically, it's exactly what I warned you about last month, after reviewing the disturbing news of weak demand for steel in China, revealed by Schnitzer Steel (NASDAQ: SCHN  ) in its earnings report. Steel Dynamics is hitting headwinds all around the globe:

The Company, through UralDial, has regulatory approval to sell Cs-131 seeds in Russia.

IsoRay markets the Proxcelan Cesium-131 brachytherapy seed for the treatment of prostate cancer; lung cancer; ocular melanoma; head and neck cancers; colorectal cancer, brain cancer; and gynecological cancer. The Company focuses to market Cesium-131 for the treatment of other malignant disease, such as breast cancer, in the near future through the use of existing technologies that have received FDA-clearance. Cesium-131 is a radioactive isotope that can be produced by the neutron bombardment of Barium-130 (Ba-130). When placed into a nuclear reactor and exposed to a flux of neutrons, Ba-130 becomes Ba-131, the radioactive material that is the parent isotope of Cesium-131. The radioactive isotope Cesium-131 is normally produced by placing a quantity of stable non-radioactive barium (ideally barium enriched in isotope Ba-130) into the neutron flux of a nuclear reactor. The irradiation process converts a small fraction of this material into a radioactive form of barium (Ba-131). The Ba-131 decays by electron capture to the ! radioactive isotope of interest (Cesium-131).

As of June 30, 2011, IsoRay had agreements with several independent radiopharmacies to assay, preload, and sterilize loose seeds. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, the Company loaded approximately 90% of Mick cartridges in the Company's own facility, which accounted for approximately 61% of seeds sold. Approximately 33% of seeds sold are strand configurations, including strands preloaded in needles and the remaining 6% of seeds are sold as loose seeds.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Amid the boom in Latin America lately, Chile has produced substantial amounts of economic success. But the drop in commodities markets around the world has weighed on resource-reliant industries, and Sociedad Quimica y Minera (NYSE: SQM  ) is one of the companies that has suffered from that trend. On Tuesday, the company will release its latest quarterly results, and investors are nervous about whether SQM will be able to meet the growth expectations they have for the chemical company.

  • [By Dan Newman]

    Resilient resources
While weakness in fertilizer markets hurt Sociedad Quimica y Minera (NYSE: SQM  ) this year, higher sales volume and margins in other businesses helped the company grow earnings 19% over 2012. Sociedad has a hand in many industrial resources, from iodine to lithium, and it boasts healthy double-digit profit margins. It is also expanding its production capacity to keep up with a world hungry for more fertilizer-based food and lithium-based batteries. Still, the company failed to meet recent expectations and has missed the market rally this year. If markets get spooked and head downward, investors could find peace of mind in the intrinsic value of Sociedad's physical resources, as well as its 2.6% dividend yield.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

When most investors think of optical sensor makers, they tend to think of larger names like Honeywell International Inc. (NYSE:HON) or Vishay Intertechnology (NYSE:VSH). And well they should. VSH is a $2 billion company, and HON is a $71.5 billion organization. The fact is, however, there are a few small cap stocks in the optical sensor space that are worth a look, and one of them is worth a very close look right now for a very clear reason... Advanced Photonix, Inc. (NYSEMKT:API).

In Sep 2010, CA signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hyperformix Inc. Recently; it acquired Layer 7 Technologies, a leading provider of Application Programming Interface (API) security and management. Furthermore, the acquisition of Arcot Systems Inc., a privately held company that provides authentication and fraud prevention software, in a move to boost its security offerings. These acquisitions have helped the firm to strengthen its cloud computing infrastructure and would also help to generate better profitability from the existing technology assets.

Ultratech isn't the only game in town, though, and there are multiple technologies and process steps that are going to play significant roles in the production of FinFETs and 3D circuits. With that, I would take a look at Mattson Technologies (MTSN), as this company has already accomplished the not-so-easy task of gaining meaningful share in the dry strip, rapid thermal processing (RTP), and etch markets despite competing with giants like Lam Research (LRCX), Applied Materials (AMAT), and Tokyo Electron (TOELY.PK).
