10 Best US Stocks To Watch For 2014

Cheap is converging with expensive in the American equity market, narrowing options for investors looking for bargains after the broadest rally on record lifted almost 90 percent of the Standard & Poor 500 Index this year.

The difference in valuations shrank to the smallest since at least 1990 after companies such as Hormel Foods Corp. and CenterPoint Energy Inc. rose to levels that match Ralph Lauren Corp. and Citrix Systems Inc., whose five-year average profit growth rate is twice as big. A measure of the dispersion of price-earnings ratios in the S&P 500 compiled by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. narrowed to 41 percent in June, the lowest on record, and held around that level since.

While four years of earnings growth and the Federal Reserve near-zero interest rate have led the S&P 500 on a 166 percent rally since March 2009, they have also driven up valuations just as the bull market approaches the end of its fifth year. The monolithic market means investors may have nowhere to hide should shares fall.

The cable-television M&A chatter is making its rounds again, this time with Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:CHTR), Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE:TWC), and Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) pegged as the three points of the ever-changing parties of a never-ending love triangle. The buzz is, well, was that CHTR was first in line to nab TWC. Today, however, it's starting to look like CMCSA is more seriously interested in Time Warner Cable than first thought. TWC shares jumped on the doubly-good news that it may well become the prize in a bidding war between Charter Communications and Comcast Corporation. Meanwhile, CMCSA shares have jumped (albeit not quite as firmly) on the prospect of its ownership of TWC. What's interesting - and perhaps telling - is the fact that not only have CHTR shares not soared in the wake of what would normally be viewed as good news, but Charter shares have actually stumbled heading into the possible bidding war. Might this be an omen of what's actually in store for Charter Communications?

Alamy In the end, despite much anticipation, Disney (DIS) didn't use much of the Force, Luke. Disney hosted its biennial D23 fan club expo in Anaheim over the weekend, and while Star Wars promised to be a major part of the festivities, the family entertainment giant was surprisingly tight-lipped about the iconic sci-fi franchise. There was little to say by Disney executives on the seventh installment of the movie series that J.J. Abrams will be bringing to a multiplex near you in two years. As for Star Wars-themed attractions, Disney was equally cryptic on any new rides, shows, and attractions that it may open to cash in on the global popularity of its Star Wars characters. There was a Star Wars display hinting at potential attractions, but good luck deciphering the crates on display with lettering indicating that they contain everything from assorted lightsabers to bantha milk. One crate appeared to have housed R2-D2 until he carved his way out. Is the suggestion here that we'll be getting an interactive ride where guests can swing about virtual sabers for points, step into the Mos Eisley cantina or some other elaborate theme restaurant to order the creamy blue bantha beverage, and go on an R2-D2's Great Escape thrill ride? We just don't know, yet. Clearly something is coming. The crates were addressed to Disney's imagineering department, where new attractions are developed. Fans will simply have to wait. What an Amazing Synergy You've Discovered When Disney stunned investors by revealing that it would be spending more than $4 billion to acquire George Lucas' Lucasfilm, the chatter immediately turned to what it could do with the potent Star Wars franchise that seemed to be languishing under its creator. There were no rational fears that Disney would dumb down the defining science fiction property. Mickey Mouse and Pluto weren't going to be cast as Han Solo and Chewbacca, respectively. Minnie Mouse wasn't going to channel Princess Leia. Donald Duck wouldn'
