Hot Services Stocks To Own For 2014

Think of Iron Mountain (IRM) as any heavy metal band after Nirvana broke in 1991. Suddenly, a way of playing music that had been wildly successful was looked at as an anachronism and bands like Metallica cut their hair, wore flannel and did just about anything they could think of to fit in in a changed world.

That’s Iron Mountain today. It has a business that was once fantastic–storing paper files for corporations. But in a digital world, that business is pass茅, even if it still brings in tons of money. Sure, Iron Mountain is doing everything it can to change its stripes–offering digital services, trying to morph into a REIT–but Iron Mountain is still what it is.

And that’s a struggling business.

On Friday, Iron Mountain released financial results and promptly fell 4.3%, as its earnings and revenue were in line with analyst forecasts but Iron Mountain’s North American storage growth turned negative, perhaps for the first time ever, notes Jefferies’ Dan Dolev and Trevor Young.

Berman pioneered the idea of the World Poker Tour (WPT) and sold the concept to the Travel Channel. Watching poker on television had always been boring since the viewing audience could not see the down cards which the players held. Berman remedied that problem by allowing a camera to expose the down cards to the TV audience. That idea suddenly transformed Texas Holdem into a fascinating spectator sport. By the end of 2003 the stock had reached its book value of 15 dollars a share and I decided to take my profits, perhaps a bit prematurely. The stock quickly climbed to about 30 dollars a share on sheer momentum.

    2. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) The REIT is another alternative vehicle that's gone mainstream in recent years. Hundreds of broad-based and specialized real estate companies and ETFs are available, and after a correction a few months ago, many are on the cheap side. Like any other alternative, this should be a seasoning for your portfolio and not the sauce itself. For most retail investors, a stake in an indexed fund like the SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSE: RWR) should be more than adequate, or look into the companies that provide services to the REIT industry like HFF (NYSE: HF) and Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL).
